UPF Clothing Explained
How to interpret a sourced UPF rating and compare garments without inventing protection claims.

UPF belongs to the garment
A UPF rating is a sourced characteristic of a particular garment or fabric claim. Do not infer it from color, material name, or the phrase sun shirt when the rating is unavailable.
Check the exact variant
Construction, fabric, color, stretch, wear, and wetness may differ among garments and variants. Use the manufacturer care and product information for the exact item.
Coverage still matters
A rated shirt does not cover the head, hands, or every exposed area. Think about garment cut, sleeve length, neckline, fit, hat coverage, and sunscreen for remaining exposed skin.
Compare useful details
Alongside a sourced UPF rating, compare size range, coverage, material, care instructions, water-activity suitability, and variant availability when those facts are provided.

Sunscreen works best as one part of a broader sun-protection approach that can also include shade, protective clothing, a brimmed hat, and sunglasses.
